Everyone knows what posture is, but you may not understand hyperkyphosis well. Medical personnel recognize that poor posture is the culprit in many cases involving spinal health and misalignments of the spine. Unfortunately, it’s relatively easy to slip into a routine where you develop poor posture because it happens slowly over time rather than by a sudden type of injury. Little by little, you begin to hunch forward more and more, and you might even notice that you don’t seem to be as tall as you once were.

People who are beginning to develop bad posture habits may be prompted by friends and relatives to sit straighter or stand up straighter. Many professionals need to sit in their offices for long periods, which leads to poor posture. That’s also true for anyone who spends many hours working on tablets, smartphones, computers, or any other activity which calls for you to be hunched over for long periods.

What is hyperkyphosis?

Also known as hunchback syndrome

This medical condition is characterized by a pronounced forward rounding of the back and is crudely referred to as hunchback syndrome. Underneath that forward rounding is an abnormally curved spine, causing unusual back pain as well as a lot of stiffness. It tends to afflict women more than men and can be related to osteoporosis, which is a weakening of the bones that frequently affects older individuals.

Hyperkyphosis can be unsightly and can cause a loss of confidence for any individual afflicted by it because victims are usually aware of the appearance they present. In the past, hyperkyphosis was treated primarily by pain medications, physical therapy, and sometimes even surgery. However, a more modern approach is to treat hyperkyphosis through what many call “corrective” chiropractic treatment. Corrective chiropractic care works to improve and ideally correct underlying abnormal spine alignment including hyperkyphosis.

What is good posture?

Treating poor posture with chiropractic care

Posture is a general term that refers to the support delivered by the spinal cord to our bodies when in a sitting or standing position. Here is what good posture should look like:

  • from in front, the head should be directly over the rib cage and shoulders
  • in this position, the head should not be rotated, shifted, or tilted to either side
  • the rib cage and shoulders should center above the hips and pelvis
  • both shoulders should be at approximately the same height
  • the shoulders should not be shifted off-center
  • hips should center over the feet.

Having a healthy posture will allow you to enjoy maximum energy efficiency while also lowering the overall effect of gravity on your joints, ligaments, and muscles.
